P-3 visas: an overview

The P-3 visa is designed for aliens entering the U.S. to perform, teach, or coach in a specific field. These fields commonly include ethnic and cultural music, folk, artistic, and theatrical performances. For example, Cirque du Soleil® members could travel to the U.S. on a P-3 visa.

Requirements for a P-3 visa:

In order to qualify for P-3 visa, the alien:

  1. Must come the U.S. to develop, promote, or facilitate a culturally unique art form;
  2. Must be sponsored by a cultural, educational, or governmental organization;
  3. Must have achieved recognition in the culturally unique program that they will perform in.

How a P-3 visa is filed:

First, a cultural, educational, or governmental organization must apply to the USCIS to sponsor a cultural program. If the program is approved, the alien then applies for a P-3 visa. The application should include evidence that demonstrates the alien's cultural qualifications. Once the alien's visa is approved, he or she may travel to the U.S.
