USCIS extends Temporary Protected Status for Sudanese

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) was officially extended until May 2, 2010 for certain Sudanese nationals living in the US. Previously, the TPS for Sudanese was due to expire on November 2, 2008. To be eligible for the extension, you must have entered the country on or before October 7, 2004. Eligible persons must re-register with the USCIS within the 60-day period from August 14, 2008 to October 14, 2008.

Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) will automatically be extended until May 2, 2009 to prevent lapse in employment while applications are processing. Once the application has been processed, new EADs will be issued to the applicant.

The extension was granted because the extraordinary conditions that prompted the original grant of TPS are still present in Sudan. The armed conflict in Sudan has resulted in a total of 2,387,000 internally displaced persons (80,000 of whom became displaced in the first to months of 2008).

For more information, see a copy of the USCIS notice officially extending the TPS:
